A steelhead adventure. The planning, filming, editing and entire fly fishing adventure behind “Fall Run” is, hands down, my favorite T-Motion production yet. Six years after filming “Oregon Coast Steelhead”, Jeff Hickman, Jakob Lund and I met up for another steelhead quest on camera. We decided to take our chances and hit a new river, unknown to any of us. Against all possible odds, luck landed on our side. A high rising river, torrential downpour, and slime slick rocks made our navigation a gnarly mess. We were soaked head to toe, tripping and slipping along the river nearly all day. How I managed to keep my camera and gear from getting waterlogged is a mystery. It was wet! But, as any steelhead fisherman will tell you, it is the most typical weather you encounter on a river with big fish. Against the odds, we caught a few simply amazing fish. And one with a pretty darn good story. Hope you enjoy this film of fellowship and fish on unknown Pacific Northwest water. I sure enjoyed it! Thanks to my great fishing buddies at Fish the Swing and Salmonfly Syndicate for making it all happen. And thanks to the brave steelhead who made their way, half-way across the world, predators on their tails, and safely up this tiny inland river to my camera lens. Now that’s the adventure…there’s nothing like that.

During the last week of May, the adult salmonflies on the Deschutes River in Oregon start driving fly fishers and rainbows crazy. This video, Sky High Salmonflies, came together with weather perfect, bugs everywhere and with two angler/guides with a rare day off work. Elke Littleleaf and Jakob Lund get caught up in the frenzy. Amid great scenery and slashing strikes on dry flies, I experimented with some new camera technology. The filming of this T-Motion video took Todd to British Columbia, Canada and the little ski town named Fernie. There, he met up with local fly fishing guide, Beckie Clarke. Beckie is known for her outgoing personality, great sense of humor and her absolute passion for fly fishing and living life to
the fullest. This made for phenomenal filming potential! There they were greeted with wet fall weather, plus wind, snow, grizzly bears and wolves. In spite of all that, Beckie brings her favorite streams throughout the Elk Valley up close and personal for T-Motion viewers. British Columbia’s mountains and valleys are covered in brilliant fall foliage. They walk into remote rivers, capturing the incredible scenery, the crystal clear water and a half dozen big bull taps the best of B.C fishing into 9 minutes of pure gold.

Part #2 of the epic trip to Northern British Columbia. it was a glimpse into a life most people dream of; living within a short walk to stellar waters, seeing mountains in every direction, and sharing habitat with North America’s kings of the food chain – the grizzly bears and wolves who frequently visit camp. The simplicity of living in the back-country among all these things, away from the rat race AND the Catch Magazine office – not to mention chasing FATTY CANADIAN STEELHEAD made Todd wanna live there! But it wouldn’t be all playtime, cause it’s a daunting reality of daily tasks required to survive there: milling trees, building everything from scratch, solar power, gardening and the weekly planeload of supplies. Todd caught up on the good old tunes of Canadian folk legend Gordon Lightfoot, made great lifetime friends, and came home with a new outlook on life. Simplify, simplify, simplify!
Do that and catch fish, too….. gotta love it!

I joined Jennifer & Jack Mitchell at the Steelhead Ranch located in Washington State. Working with Jennifer on this T-Motion feature was quite an experience as the steelies weren’t quite cooperating during our two day trip. Although the swinging was tough, the combination of the the gorgeous falls colors and Jennifer’s casting were a perfect combo to create a spey short that many say is the epitome of ” Beautiful Skagit”.
