Australia Coast to Coast is the longest and most in-depth fly fishing film ever produced by Todd Moen and T-Motion Theater, with a runtime of more than 25 minutes. Filmed across Australia’s vast and diverse coastlines, this ambitious fly fishing documentary follows UK fly fishing virtuoso Alex Jardine as he travels from the Great Barrier Reef on the east coast to the Ningaloo Reef on the west coast, pursuing more than eight iconic saltwater species on the fly.
In March 2019, Todd Moen, working with the support of Tourism Australia, set out to capture Australia’s extraordinary fly fishing terrain from coast to coast. The journey spanned some of the country’s most legendary destinations, including Fraser Island and the Whitsundays on the east coast, and Exmouth and the Mackerel Islands on the west coast. This project represents one of the most geographically expansive fly fishing films ever undertaken in Australia.
From the Great Barrier Reef, the film showcases action for red throat emperor and shark mackerel. Along Australia’s eastern shoreline, viewers experience explosive fly fishing for barramundi and mackerel tuna. In the northwestern bays and inlets, the focus shifts to golden trevally, cobia, and the magnificent queenfish, all filmed in pristine saltwater environments. Sweeping aerial footage over coral reefs and jewel-toned waters immerses viewers in the scale, beauty, and diversity of Australia’s fisheries.
The greatest challenge in producing Australia Coast to Coast was synthesizing the immense volume of footage, wide range of locations, and diverse fish species into a cohesive story. Extensive pre-COVID travel across the continent required significant time in transit and long periods away from family, making this one of Todd Moen’s most demanding projects, both personally and professionally, and also one of his proudest achievements as a filmmaker.
