Deep in the remote backcountry of Northern British Columbia, the Belford family built a life around one of the world’s most legendary wild steelhead rivers. What began more than five decades ago as a family adventure evolved into a lasting legacy: Damdochax River Lodge. This early film by renowned fly fishing filmmaker Todd Moen tells the powerful story of Hannah Belford and her mother, who guide, own, and operate this world-class steelhead fly fishing lodge with the same grit, heart, and dedication that founded it generations ago.
Part of Todd Moen’s early filmmaking career, Steelhead Dreams Part 1 & Part 2 stands as one of the first authentic steelhead film series to document a family-run fishing lodge in the remote wilderness of British Columbia. Long before fly fishing films became highly produced, this two-part series captured the raw reality of life, work, and steelhead fishing in the backcountry…highlighting the deep connection between family, river, and livelihood.
British Columbia, Canada’s westernmost province, is globally renowned for its wild landscapes, pristine rivers, and exceptional steelhead fly fishing. From rugged Pacific coastline to towering mountain ranges, the province is home to massive river systems that flow into the Pacific Ocean and support thriving populations of anadromous fish. Anglers from around the world travel to British Columbia to pursue wild steelhead, often considered the ultimate prize in fly fishing. The region also supports all five species of Pacific salmon, along with bull trout, Dolly Varden, and sea-run cutthroat trout.
Beyond the fishing, Northern British Columbia’s wilderness provides a striking backdrop. Bald eagles, moose, wolverines, and grizzly bears are a constant presence, adding beauty and intensity to time spent on the river. Set against this untamed landscape, Steelhead Dreams 1 & 2 captures more than exceptional fishing…it documents the resilience, leadership, and family heritage that define Damdochax River Lodge and Hannah Belford who continuing its legacy.
This two-part film series is a story about steelhead, wilderness, family, and women in guiding, and remains a foundational work in Todd Moen’s filmmaking career…told from the heart of British Columbia’s backcountry.

Your videos are far and away the best out there. You masterly capture the art and nature of fly fishing. The subjects in the videos also portrayed beautifully. I noticed there is part one of steelhead dreams, is there a part two coming? Keep up the great work!
